Cable & Wireless College
Coventry, Warwickshire
What makes the building satisfactory in the end is the way in which each move has been thought through at so many different levels.
Ten-acre site overlooking open countryside
Cable & Wireless plc commissioned MJP to design a telecommunications training and conference centre on a 10-acre site overlooking open countryside in Warwickshire’s green belt.
Exemplary environmental performance
Working closely with the client, we compiled a detailed brief, including exemplary environmental objectives for the project. The college was designed for training courses and conferences extending over a number of days. It provides all associated facilities on site.
Complete range of training and conference facilities
The complex includes teaching and conference spaces, residential accommodation, sports and leisure facilities, catering, exhibition space, library, and administration. MJP also managed and co-ordinated the fit-out of the building.
Teaching rooms, library and exhibition space
These are located at the front of the site and are highly flexible, north-lit and naturally ventilated. They are arranged in two wings, each side of an entrance court, and are linked at first floor by a library and telecommunications exhibition space.
Residences
Hotel-style residential accommodation is arranged in a terrace along the back of the site, behind the teaching wings, separated by landscaped courts. A variety of room types are provided. A dining room is located on the ground floor at the centre of the terrace.
Social hub
An ocular court forms the social hub at the centre of the complex, linking residential, administration, catering and teaching facilities.
Sports and leisure
There is a separate leisure pavilion in the grounds, at the end of one of the landscaped courts. It includes a swimming pool, games courts and changing rooms.
Westwood, Network Rail
The development has been taken over by Network Rail and is now called the Westwood Training Centre.
