Green Gown Award 2012 : University of Birmingham project on shortlist

MJP’s University of Birmingham Steam Bridge is part of the University’s ‘Bridging the Gap : Continuous Reduction in Carbon Footprint’ project that has been shortlisted for the 2012 Green Gown Awards.

Now in their 8th year, the Green Gown Awards recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK. The Awards have become established as the most prestigious recognition of sustainability best practice within the further and higher education sector.

The Steam Bridge is a key component of the University of Birmingham’s forward-looking major programme to refurbish and extend their combined heat and power (CHP) network. The bridge carries services over a busy railway and canal, and incorporates a walkway to allow safe access for internal maintenance and inspection of the steam mains, which forms a crucial part of the University’s sustainable energy strategy, reducing their carbon footprint in excess of 1,500 tonnes of carbon per year.
