The brief was for luxury holiday villas, large enough to be shared by three families (each with a swimming pool, gym and garden) along with a hotel, extensive leisure facilities, a lakeside restaurant, and parking.
The sloping site lies within a beautiful natural landscape surrounded by wooded hills, next to a lake and canal, about 30km from the centre of Shanghai.
Our design proposals aim to respect and enhance this setting by;
- allowing the green landscape and water to permeate throughout the site and to take priority over the buildings
- using a planning arrangement which is logical and efficient, but allows informality in the arrangement of the above-ground buildings in the landscape
- using a graceful, modern architectural language which merges easily with the landscape and allows penetration of natural light down to all levels
Local planning policy restricted the floor area of accommodation above the highest site level to 10% of the total, so that the majority of the buildings are below ground and dug into the hillside.
Holiday villas all stand on the highest levels of the site where they benefit from the best views of the landscape within the site and surrounding it. The hotel rooms are on two levels below, cascading down towards the canal.
A restaurant is located at the eastern end of the site and designed to take advantage of the best views over the lake and back over the site towards the western hills. There is a cafe at the southern end of the site. These two facilities form focal destination points at each end of the development.
A swimming pool lies at the centre of the composition, giving the impression that the canal has flowed into the site, right up to the hotel reception building. This provides a spectacular arrival experience, with a views out over the water and landscape.
