Civic Trust Awards 2013 : University of Birmingham Steambridge

The MJP designed University of Birmingham Steambridge has received recognition at the 2013 Civic Trust Awards ceremony at Cardiff City Hall this evening (Saturday 9th March).

Now in their 54th year, the Civic Trust Awards recognise the best in the built environment, from architecture to planning, townscape to infrastructure along with the public realm in its wider context.

MJP Architects have received 24 Civic Trust Awards and commendations since 1980. Two MJP designed projects were amongst the winners in 2012, with Kendrew Quadrangle for St John’s Oxford receiving a Civic Trust Award and Maggies Centre Cheltenham a commendation.

…a key component of a forward-looking major programme to refurbish and extend the University of Birmingham’s combined heat and power (CHP) network…

The Steambridge is designed as an elegant, sinuous sculptural form, ‘flowing’ across the canal and railway lines. Its curved silver cladding reflects the colours of the trees and water, whilst the rippling slots enliven its surface. The curved 2k finished, laser cut, Grade 316 stainless cladding was designed by MJP for a very long service life with zero cleaning and maintenance.

The Steambridge is a key component of a forward-looking major programme to refurbish and extend the University of Birmingham’s combined heat and power (CHP) network and has been fully operational since September 2011. The performance of the new link has been closely monitored by the University and its tangible benefits over a single year of operation have been:

  • A reduction in gas consumption equivalent to 23,592Mwh, due to the reduced use of boilers at the Medical School.
  • A 4,224Mwh decrease in electricity purchased from grid, due to increased generation by CHP.
  • Carbon savings of 1,879 tonnes of CO2, which exceeds the target reduction by 25% and made a major contribution to the achievement of a 20% reduction in the University’s carbon footprint since 2005/6.

As a visible representation of their carbon reduction programme, the Steambridge has become well liked by the members of the University. It won “Idea of the Year” at the 2012 University of Birmingham BUAFTA Awards for Tremendous Achievement.
